Right now, I’m watching a LOT of rugby. The once in every four years event which is the Rugby World Cup is taking place in France, and Himself is indulging me in the full-on viewing experience. As it’s available on free-to-view TV (a rarity here in the UK) I’ve been filling my boots π
And by that I mean watching up to 7 games per weekend. Rugby games are 40 minutes each way, except in the knock out stages – but that’s still a LOT of rugby for someone who’s not a fan. So, knowing this was to come, I’ve obviously been totally indulging Himself in choosing any other TV we watch.
Ever since I ruined things for him with some of his favourite action heroes by mocking them (or what I call expressing my opinion about them, the programmes they’re appearing in, and/or their public persona), I’ve tried to be a tad gentler with him.
Of late, what we’ve been watching has been a solid diet of police procedurals.
Longmire, with it’s stereotypically traditional, old-fashioned, strong ‘n silent, manly man central character, has been right up his street. And the sheriff’s cabin out in the gorgeous Wyoming countryside was too. I held back on my usual picking at stuff which irked me, but he mentioned the cultural appropriation in the Indian bit of its cowboys and Indians stuff before I had to bite my lip. All that said, it’s been a pleasant enough way to pass a weekday evening.
Justified, with another manly man central character, although this time one with more charm and wit – if lacking in the gorgeous countryside vistas – this worked better for us both. I didn’t have to hold back as much, because there were laughs a-plenty to distract me. It’s been amusing viewing, and there have been some great one liners which I have tucked away for later use.
Beck, from Sweden, where the detecting bit is well done, but where the standout character is a minor one – Beck’s elderly neighbour, played by an iconic and much loved Swedish actor. He is an absolute hoot – ugly as can be, he’s lived what can only be described as a colourful life, and isn’t done with it yet. Many an episode finds the pair of them standing on their balconies of a nighttime, sharing a brandy and talking. Sometimes the conversations are relevant and, even more rarely, they make sense π
Annika, with a female central character (hoorah!) is based in Scotland. The lead character has Norwegian roots and is a literature buff. She regularly talks direct to camera (and so to the viewers) mid programme, and loves to discuss the parallels between the current case and the works of Ibsen, Shakespeare and the like. This is a good example of the quirkiness of British humour – if that happens to be your thing.
Deadloch, with a large cast of women (double hoorah!) is set in Tasmania in a small town where the incomers are largely women and/or new age practitioners, which causes a culture clash with the old school, patriarchal and misogynist Aussie male locals. Someone is killing men, so the serious hunt for a murderer is played out against a lot fair bit of non-politically correct ribbing. This is TV which doesn’t take itself seriously, and it’s great fun as a result π
Although I’d like to blame the obvious theme on Himself, it’s more likely that police procedural is where his love of action intersects with my enjoyment of thrillers and mysteries.
What are you watching? Let me hear your recommendations for what should I be adding to my to be viewed list?

I’ve watched some Deadloch (funny, though some characters stress me out), and Beck (too bleak for me). I have heard good things about the banter in Justified, although I have a lot of issues with westerns. When spouse watches terrible TV, it’s hard for me to refrain from pointing out plot holes and in some cases blatant and willful ignorance or reality on the part of the writers. Once he got so mad he turned off the TV. So I’ll often take myself off to another room with a book and leave him in peace.

Hello Debs! My husband and I are currently watching the new seasons of Survivor and the Amazing Race. We just finished Only Murders in the Building, which we both love!

Yeah, some of the characters are a tad stressy and extreme in Deadloch, and don’t start me on the counsellor – my professional hackles were up (but they generally are at most of the depictions of therapists in TV/film). Beck, like much of the Scandinavian stuff can be very dark indeed, yet we’re both drawn to them. Maybe it’s Scandinavia we’re drawn to. For me, those ridiculous situations with his neighbour on the balcony make sure each episode ends on a light, sometimes hilarious note. And yeah – I know what you mean about westerns… I get a LOT of reading done when Himself watches that kind of stuff. He doesn’t get mad with me, but I can see that he mourns being unable to see his manly man/action heroes how they were before I raised his awareness.

I’ve heard good things about Only Murders, and have instructed Himself to source it for us to watch. I shall be monitoring his progress, as sometimes he “forgets” π That said, with 4 rugby games this weekend, 2 the next, and the final the one after, we’re still in me owing him big on the TV viewing front! I’ll check out Survivor and the Amazing Race to see if I can add them to our list, thanks Christie.

There was a western series on Netflix with Emily Blunt that was probably more accurate (and more gruesome) than many, but of course it started with rape. So tired of rape and torture.

I loved Justified.
I just finished the final season of Sex Education on Netflix. I liked it a lot.
I am also watching the latest seasons of Survivor and Amazing Race. I love them both.

The wit on Justified really made it! Another vote for Survivor and Amazing Race means I better get to googling. I’ll check out Sex Education too, even though we don’t have Netflix, but Himself usually manages to find stuff somewhere, even if it’s later than first released. Thanks Tater π

I love Annika. Has the new season started? My daughter suggested I watch Deadlock, and I did watch 3 or 4 episodes, but the character from Darwin was just too annoying, so I quit.

We’ve watched seasons 1 & 2, so I certainly hope they’ll be getting a move on with season – 3 but there’s nothing in the press to confirm or deny any plans. But it was quite the cliff-hanger ending so I’d be really peeved if it didn’t happen (and soon!)
We recently caught up with another police procedural Nicola Walker did before Annika – Unforgotten. It’s a lot darker, but also excellent.
Totally get that Nicki – one seriously abrasive and over the top character for sure. To be honest, I don’t usually enjoy over the top humour, especially when based around such extreme pieces of stereotyping but, for some reason, I must’ve been in the right headspace for it when we watched.

Just finished Only Murders in the Building. Loved it. Have started watching Endeavour, the prequel to Inspector Morse [that I’ve never seen]. Also loved The Madame Blanc Mysteries that are so cozy you’ll swoon.

We just tore through “Daisy Jones & The Six” on Amazon Prime. Loved it. We’re currently deciding which show to binge this fall/winter, as we usually do one every year. “Justified” is a possibility. Or maybe “Yellowstone”…no idea yet.

Oh, I’ve not heard of the Madame Blanc Mysteries and I absolutely love a cozy mystery π
Never could watch Endeavour as the actor was a dead spit of an ex, which I found most disconcerting. But I do hear great things about it and maybe now that I’m expecting the likeness, it might not have quite the same impact.
Only Murders is heading the list Himself has currently got in his sweaty little mitt (metaphorically anyway!)

I’ve yet to read the Daisy Jones book, and I have rules about books before film/TV which I refuse to break too often! Has there been some gossip about/around “Yellowstone”? Not that it matters or will affect my decision, but it’s tickling a random if unconnected synapsis somewhere…?

The only thing I’ve heard about “Yellowstone” is that it’s a great show.

Good to know. I know my synapsis sometimes get lost in the mass of stuff this old lady has accumulated in her brain! π
