A song…

Lots still going on, so I thought I’d do a music post as it’s been a while. I picked a random selection of prompts from PInterest, and reading back, most of my choices have turned out to be tracks from favourite albums.

from a favourite album: Ngiculela from Stevie Wonder’s perfect double album Songs in the Key of Life. While hard to nominate just one track, this is one I return to, and love to sing along with.

that is the opening track to an album: What’s Going On? from the album of the same name. Marvin Gaye had such a beautiful voice and this is an iconic album. Although past his best by then, I was able to see him live in London not long before he died.

that isn’t in my usual genre: House of the Rising Sun by the Animals. I used to play guitar in school – both classical and folk – and this is one of the songs I played and sang. Despite that, this version is the absolute dog’s doodahs – no question.

I heard on a TV show: Jeff Buckley’s version of Hallelujah was the song playing over a scene in ER, and I had to hunt it down because it haunted me. The whole album is *chef’s kiss* perfection.

to slow dance to: Dos Gardenias from The Bueno Vista Social Club. Ibrahim Ferrer’s voice is a thing of beauty and is simply perfect for this sad love song. This is the swaying version of a slow dance rather than a suggestive version, but I am 66 years old 🙂

from a favourite film: Raindrops keep falling on my head from Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. In the UK, this was a hit for Frenchman Sacha Distel, but I much prefer the original version by B J Thomas .

that’s my favourite TV theme: Strange Game written and performed by Mick Jagger especially for the series Slow Horses, and is absolutely on the money for this darkly humorous piece of TV. Do give it a try if you haven’t already.

that reminds me of a transition in my life: Homeless from the album Graceland, here performed live by Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Living in Africa changes you, and while unsure at first, I came to love much about it.

I used to hate, but now I love: She – I hated it when performed by Charles Aznavour, but hearing Elvis Costello’s version in Notting Hill, I now rather like it 🙂 Indeed, I’d love for someone to – if not sing it to me – to play this version for me.

that makes me want to dance: Tamacun from Rodrigo y Gabriela – tell me it doesn’t make you want to move!

I’m always looking for music to add to my playlists, so do suggest something you think I might like, or a favourite of yours from one of the categories above 🙂

  1. I actually love Rufus Wainright’s version of “Hallelujah” that’s in the movie SHREK. And GOOD MORNING VIETNAM has a bombing montage that absolutely destroyed “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong for me. I can’t think of anything else when I hear that song now. My husband and I used to do a night club two-step (sort of like a rumba) to Selena’s “Dreaming,” so that would probably count as a slow song. As for dancing…there are just too many I can dance to, but nothing beats doing a hustle to “I Will Survive.” Though as I get older, I think my favorite songs are ones I can sing with while cooking!

  2. What a great collection of songs. It’s always, always bothered me that there’s not been a biopic made of Marvin Gaye. I’ve even chosen John Legend as the person I think would portray him the best, but no one from Hollywood seems to want to listen to me. 😆 “What’s Going On?” is a wonderful song. “Mercy Mercy Me” was on the same album– definitely a triumph for him.

You gotta love anyone who’s a Jeff Buckley person. 😉 Great list, Debs. – Marty

  3. Fantastic group of songs! I’m familiar with The Animals version of The House of the Rising Sun, but hearing them makes me think I knew another version earlier. I can’t figure out what it might have been. The Sixties, when I was in college, was the time of folk songs. I didn’t play the guitar, but I bought a baritone ukulele to sing along with.

That clip from Butch Cassidy was fun to watch–all that good humor.

A TV theme is fun. It’s something you learn and sing along with as you anticipate the show.

  4. Great choices. When I see Elvis Costello I think of Alison’s red shoes and those pesky angels. I like Santana whose music has charmed me over the years with the tunes as much as the lyrics.

  5. True story: we were driving in the car with my parents the other day, and “What’s Going On” came on. At that point, my mom said she was completely unfamiliar with the song. Didn’t know it, had never heard it, yadda yadda. My dad and I both looked at her incredulously. How can you NOT KNOW “What’s Going On”??

  6. Funnily enough, I had trouble with picking a slow song as there are so many options dependant upon who you’re dancing with. My usual ones would be those which are sultry, but Himself doesn’t dance, so a shuffle is the best I can hope for 😉 I know what you mean about Good Morning Vietnam and Louis Armstrong – it did kill it. ‘I Will Survive’ is a GREAT call – maybe one day, I do a disco special! 😀

  7. Kari, you’re a sweetheart to say so. I know that my musical taste hasn’t progressed for decades, but – as you say – there’s enough choices even then for me to populate oh so many lists. I would love to see your selections ❤

  8. Yeah, Marvin had quite the life story – it really makes no sense why no-one’s done it yet.

Until I went looking for the song, I didn’t know the story about Jeff Buckley – such a loss to the music world.

  9. A baritone ukulele sounds great fun Nicki. I’d have loved to include something from The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, but couldn’t find a prompt for it. My granddaughter just got her first ukulele and loves it!

I’d love to be able to sing along with Mick without sounding rubbish, but there’s no chance of that happening anytime soon, so I just groove along with it instead (clearly showing my age by my vocabulary choice there!) 😀

  10. I always thought of Elvis Costello as being a bit too punk for me, but as he’s aged and I’ve listened to his lyrics… things are changing.
And yes, Santana has always been a band I’ve loved – for the reasons you state.

  11. Mark, I suspect my Mum would say the same, although she liked music, it was hugely influenced by what was on the radio and I suspect that it was simply too long a track. But I agree, it was a seminal moment in music!

  12. Thanks for sharing these, Debs. We are on a similar vein for our posts this week…music. My daughter and granddaughter love BTS. I haven’t listened to any KPOP, but I asked her to send me a couple of songs to see if I liked them. She sent me a Spotify list she made called BTS for Beginners. I’ve only listened to one song so far, My Universe, a collaboration between Coldplay and BTS. I did enjoy it.

  13. I thought that when I read yours too 🙂 I’d not heard of BTS and had to google, but am aware that KPOP is a huge thing. My daughter’s taste in music is pretty laid back and old style too, so I’ll have to wait for my granddaughter to grow up a little bit to bring me up to date!
