Have you ever….

  1. Ridden in a cable car?
I rode the cable car from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island in NYC to have dinner with work friends, back when I travelled down the east coast of America some 40 years ago. Despite being so close to 24-hour-on-the-go Manhattan, Roosevelt Island was such an oasis of calm that the experience has stayed with me.
  2. Lost your wallet/purse?
I lost my money and cards when my handbag was pickpocketed in a London railway station. It happened at a particularly stressful time after I had broken up with my ex but was still sharing our home while waiting for it to sell, and followed a row with my mother over her overt support for my ex (of the “it’s such a shame, it’s not like he drinks or beats you” sort). All of which explains why I wasn’t paying attention properly which, as a long time resident of London, I usually did.
  3. Punched someone?
An embarrassing admission for me to make. I punched (on 2 separate occasions), our next door neighbour’s (also my father boss’s) eldest son, for being mean to my sister. The red mist descended, and I had no memory of the actual punch either time, but he had a great big shiner and everyone present said it was me. I’m not sure who was more embarrassed the following day at school, him or me. To be honest, it scared me, and I did my best to learn how to repress my temper after that.
  4. Been hypnotized?
Just the once. Not up on stage for entertainment, but by a therapist. Although I remained conscious throughout, I felt like a little girl and spoke in the vocabulary of one too (I was in my fifties at the time). It was a most illuminating experience.
  5. Fainted in public?
When I fainted – without warning or apparent cause – in my mid 30s while in the reception area of a hotel, I was extremely grateful that a colleague caught me before I hit my head on the flagstone floor. I was sent for a battery of tests but never discovered the reason, nor the presence of any underlying condition.
  6. Ever slept under the stars?
Returning from a night out while staying with my grandparents at their home in southern Spain, my friend and I realised that neither of us had picked up the house keys. So, rather than disturb my grandparents in the early hours of the morning, we borrowed a couple of lilos and some bedding from guys we knew, and slept in the garden. We were both young and attractive, so I have to say what lovely guys they were, as they never attempted to take advantage – indeed they laughed at themselves for it 🙂
  7. Been so drunk I didn’t remember what I’d done the night before?
I was at a rugby club event, so while there certainly had been drink taken, I don’t believe I was particularly drunk (and had no hangover the next day). Indeed, I clearly remember thinking I wasn’t actually enjoying myself, so called a taxi and went home to bed. But the following day, I saw a photo of myself on social media, behind the bar pulling pints – and to the best of my knowledge, I didn’t (and still don’t) know how to pull a pint. I’d always prided myself on remembering everything, no matter how awful, so not recalling this came as a shock. That evening was a trigger to change my lifestyle – indeed, the Universe sent me a recovering alcoholic as a prospective partner shortly thereafter.
  8. Skipped school?
I regularly skipped lessons while at boarding school to attend the tennis championships at Wimbledon. Our school was on the high street of a small village, and I’d walk out, catch a bus, then a train. In those days, the queues at Wimbledon weren’t enormous as they are now, and I got to see a lot of tennis. Somehow, I didn’t get caught, but then I only did it once or twice during the two weeks of the tournament, and one of those days would be at the weekend.

I’ve not played the “never have I ever…” game before, and while some of these were a tad embarrassing, it was an interesting run through some old memories.

Is this a game you’ve played before? Have you ever done any of these things/had any of these experiences?

  1. I’m so glad to hear that Jane. When I admitted I’d never played it, I was looked at funny, hence why I looked up some potential questions – well, everything’s a blogging opportunity, right? 😉

I’m hoping for someone to hold their hands up that they’ve done something from my embarrassing admissions – but thank you for sharing your numbers 🙂

  2. I’ve ridden in a cable car in the mountains. Beautiful. Does hitting counting as punching? I grew up feral and there was no shortage of hitting, kicking, punching, biting, etc. As an adult? I’m taking the 5th. Twice I left my wallet on top of my car while filling it up with gas and drove off with it still on the roof of the car. In both rural New Hampshire and Los Angeles, the people who found it brought it back to me with ll the money still inside. I think of this when I think there’s no hope for humanity.

    1. I rode the peak tram up Victoria Peak, Hong Kong (many years ago).
    2. I’ve left my purse behind several times, once at a movie in Manila. I always got it back.
    3. Nope.
    4. Also no
    5. In college at a blood drive. After giving blood, they had us sit down and gave each of us a cup of coffee. The next thing I knew I was coming to with coffee spilled all over my lap.
    6. In high school we had a slumber party on a friend’s grassy front yard. That night we counted lots of falling stars.
    7. I’ve only come close to getting drunk once. My reaction was more giggling than usual.
    8. A high school boyfriend talked me into skipping school with another couple. We went to the beach I think. The school called my house, and Mom–thinking fast–said I was sick. Nice of her, huh?

You’re right. It was fun digging up some old memories.

  3. I’ve never played never have I ever but these are not the worst questions I’ve heard of for the game.

    No

    No

Yes. I accidentally punched my brother once. Broke his glasses.

Yes. I was hypnotized by a therapist hoping to break through some memory barriers.

    No

Yes. Went camping many times with family and girl scouts. And later with a friend. I suppose they weren’t “under the stars” but more in a tent or in a camper.

    No

    No

    I’m a pretty boring person.

  4. I’ve played before, and these questions are pretty tame TBH! I was hoping for something much juicier, lol. I love that you skipped school to watch a professional tennis match. That seems like something they should reward you for, rather than getting punished!

  5. Autumn, you wonderful woman, you’ve made me feel sooooo much better 🙂

I love your experience of good humans who tracked you down and returned your lost wallets. Our local FB page is full of people who’ve found stuff trying to track down the owners so they can return them. It does help when the world is being its current shitty self.

  6. Ooooh, I’d loved to have experienced the tram up Victoria Peak! And yet another one whose purse was safely returned when lost. Your Mum was an absolute legend to have covered for you – brilliant. I’m so glad you enjoyed a trip down memory lane, as that’s the bit I liked best too.

  7. You’re not boring at all Zazzy. I tried to pick questions that didn’t follow too obvious a pattern, and also none that were like some of the horror stories I’ve heard. Did your therapy hypnosis prove successful may I ask?

  8. Ally, I suspect you could select a number of questions that I’d end up answering no to and feeling the same. Horses for courses ‘n all that….

  9. Thank you Mark, I did select my questions carefully as we are all mature folk here and who’s to say whether there has been drink taken at the time of reading!

I must admit I thought it was just a jolly sensible thing to do, and I am glad I did so. It was the one interest which my sister and I shared, so I dragged her with me on a couple of my bunking off sessions, despite her being a far better behaved student that I. Her daughter loved hearing about it, while my sister determinedly insisted she’d done no such thing 😉

  10. I was shocked to get the wallet back in LA. I’d canceled all my credit cards while at work, but when I got home, there was a woman waiting at my apartment. Her son had found it at the gas station. She didn’t want a reward (because “we all have to look out for each other), but I took out all the cash that was still inside my wallet and asked her to give it to her son. She saved me a day of standing in line for a new driver’s license!

  11. Hmm. Yes and no, Debs. I don’t think it answered the questions. we were hoping it would, but it was an interesting process and worth trying.

  12. Thank you for replying Zazzy. With me it showed there was something for me to look into in more depth, but it was a long time before I got to the answers. I did wonder if continuing would’ve speeded up the process, but I suspect I needed to get there in my own way and time.
