As is the way when moving and you have packers, certain things get packed which aren’t meant to be – like the brightly coloured folder with a BIG notice on it saying “do not pack, this stays here”.
That, and the kettle…
And if you know Brits, you know that we cannot function without tea. I’d placed the kettle and tea making equipment in a crate which I’d told the packer repeatedly I’d place in my car as we left, but he decided to be helpful and, when my back was turned, packed it into a box marked “kitchen”. It took many hours and multiple boxes before we found the elusive kettle holding box… For the first time ever, both our packers didn’t drink tea (or anything else for that matter).
Of course, all the boxes get unpacked and all the things turn up eventually, which is why it’s so frustrating when things then start to go missing. First it was the power cable for the printer. I packed it carefully in the big crate containing my PC and all their relevant cables. But, now, it has vamoosed. Fortunately we have enough items of electrical kit between us that we’ve figured a work around.
Then my Kindle announced it needed charging. Now that charger has been in my bag for three weeks. Two days ago, I emptied out all the extraneous stuff as I was taking it to a medical appointment and didn’t want to resemble a bag lady when I needed to find things in it. But… can I remember where I put that charger, let alone all the other extraneous stuff? You know I can’t… and I’ve searched 😤
It’s tricky when you move somewhere isn’t it, ‘cos until everything has it’s new designated place, it’s hard to know where to put things. And when you don’t know where to put things, and you’ve much stuff which is still in transit from being unpacked to being in it’s proper place, there are oh so many potential places in which to lose things.
So, that’s where we are now. Boxes mostly gone, daily life largely able to happen, but we’ve got a while to go before we get to the good bits of dressing our home.
This is what happens when you make a decision to move into someplace smaller than you used to live, and you do so within 2 weeks of first seeing it. Before any move, it’s my habit to get out the squared paper and draw up (reasonably accurate) floor plans, and then move all my little paper cut outs which represent our furniture around the plan, until I know where each and every bit of it is going. I also count up all the built-in storage to make sure – if there isn’t a like-for-like number – that I have solutions available for any shortfall.
But there wasn’t time for that to happen this time… and it shows. Progress stalled somewhat when both of us developed medical issues which had to be addressed pronto. I’m wondering how long to let it go before I buy replacement cables. Whatever length of time I decide on, I know that’ll be just before the missing items turn up…
PS: and last night both remotes decided to stop working 🙄
What is it that always goes missing in your home? Do you work on having “a place for everything and everything in its place” or are you more free-wheeling?

Very descriptive, I can feel your frustration! I have discovered that some of my charging cables will charge something else as well. I have a mini/mini printer so I label each cable with the name of the item it charges – nerdy I know! But it gets worse, I keep all chargers in an airline ziplock bag so they are ready to grab!

Oh dear. This too shall pass and everything will get sorted out, but unpacking and figuring out the best new place for everything is exhausting and time-consuming. So sorry you have health issues on top of it all. Just think, a month from now this will all be behind you!

There’s no easy way to move house. I understand your frustrations but am thinking dark thoughts about your remote controls. How dare they bug out at this point in time? If it’s not one thing, it’s another. 🤨

Moving is the worst. Packing up things like the kitchen for a remodel is the second worst! One of the firs things I had my husband install when we moved into this house was a brass keyring holder, right next to the back door. This is where all the keys go. Because I go from 0 to Psychotic in .01 seconds if I can’t find the keys.

No Sarah, not nerdy, just organised 🙂 I have to admit that I’ve been eyeing up one of those label makers!

Thanks Jane, I know it will be behind us soon. I think I was caught out by how smoothly the first couple of weeks went, ‘cos when the third week arrived with a bang at 5am on a Monday morning, it completely threw me off my axis.
Today I’ve found my Kindle charger and Himself has fixed the remotes, so forward movement is happening.

That’s so true Ally. The remotes going on the blink has really gotten under Himself’s skin, and the lack of Kindle charger under mine. It tells a clear tale how each of us relaxes! I keep thinking “tomorrow is another day Scarlett” and no sooner do we get a better one, than the day after misbehaves. Hanging pictures is going to be interesting…

Oh yes Autumn, it has driven me crazy not having a “key place”. Today, the key place has been set – I feel better for it already. And yes, I have vacillated between worryingly calm and utter psychotic for the past couple of weeks 🙄 I don’t envy Himself…

Moving is not easy! I understand your frustration. 😘💜
I always seem to lose phone chargers!

I’m the same with chargers Kari, hence why I was careful to gather them all up and but them into my (big) bag. And then I messed up… Still, at least it has returned to the fold 🙂
This is the hardest move to date, which may be not entirely co-incidental with the fact that I’m the oldest I’ve ever been.

I’m a big fan of having a place for everything… my husband, not so much. He’s currently looking for his ear buds (I, on the other hand, know exactly where mine are) which seem to have walked away on their own. Oh, and he is always asking me to call him so he can find his phone. This, of course, doesn’t mean that I don’t lose things, and it drives me crazy to spend time looking and re-looking for them. Good luck finding everything!

When we moved to the Philippines, we had to divide things up between air freight, sea freight, and what we brought with us. I was proud that I’d thought to bring the coffee pot with us. The first morning in our apartment/hotel, I got us and started the coffee. But I was young and ignorant and didn’t think twice about what would happen to a 110 pot in a 220 outlet. It completely destroyed it.
It was 23 years ago since I last moved. I wonder how I did it, by myself mainly. But now it has faded away, and I can’t remember too many problems.

We moved into our house two years ago this month and still can’t find a few kitchen items. Granted, I’m sure they’re in one of the boxes marked KITCHEN that are currently being stored in the garage…it’s probably time we went through those, eh? (I actually started this last weekend. Finally.)
And we’ve always done our own packing, but things still end up getting packed that should not have been.

Ah yes, I feel for you Janis. I will admit that Himself is very good about having a place for everything, but he cannot remember stuff like his phone number, his car registration number, or our address and zip code (and not just because the address is new, he was still asking me for them after 5 years at our previous place). So, as we’re in that moving and notifying everyone phase… I’m constantly being asked, and I’ll admit it has gotten onto my last nerve.

Oh no Nicki! I truly feel for you after you’d thought that out in so careful and considerate a manner – especially as it was a darn good idea.
I’ve handled previous moves on my own before, but was living alone and so it was to be expected. It’s been hard doing it alone despite being a couple, but now Himself has been forced to take time off work due to his medical problem, and I cannot deny it’s been good to have his muscle to push us through the final bits.

Mark, the only time I’ve not unpacked fully is the property I moved into with my ex just before we broke up. To me it signifies that I don’t feel at home, so we’re ploughing on in a determined fashion. I will admit that I found 4 boxes of photos which I always intended to vet and just keep a handful, but they ended up on the bottom shelf of a bookcase which was behind a chair so I never saw them except on my rare forays there with the hoover – and they very much became “out of sight and out of mind”. They’re right beside my desk now, and I’m working my way through them a bit at a time each day. Mind you, I’m an amateur in comparison with my elderly neighbour who gets unpacked and everything shipshape before allowing herself to go to bed on the first day. She truly is a force of nature.

The only reason we still have unpacked boxes is because they’re duplicates and triplicates and quadruplicates of items we already have. There are two of us and at least 20 coffee mugs. Maybe someday we’ll have a garage sale!

Ah, I get you. Fortunately Himself didn’t have much in the way of “stuff” when he moved in with me as I have more than enough for the pair of us, and then some! He has built up a fair old collection of coffee & camera kit since then though 🙂
