Today I learned…

Here’s a link to a previous post which explains the origin of this idea.

… that there are more parking wardens in the UK than soldiers in the British armed forces. The scale of cutbacks to the British armed forces of late is not unknown to me, but this statistic seems to be saying that the importance we place on parking is entirely out of proportion.

… that you can buy an “emotional support” plushie missile and/or Panzerfaust (German WW2 anti-tank weapon), but whether they’re intended for children or grown men was hard for me to decipher.

… that it wasn’t pure chance the Apollo astronauts took some great photographs. In addition to all the expected training, they were also schooled in photography and had their work severely critiqued before departure. I learned this when I received a simply gorgeous book of remastered photographs from the Apollo missions for Christmas.

… that you can get pockets to cook a cheese toastie in a microwave! Oh, and that they work unexpectedly well 🙂

… that among all the other days for marking things, there is a day set aside for Typing (8th January was World Typing Day). Many decades ago, I learned how to type on a manual typewriter, progressing through electric and electronic, before moving to Word Processors and Personal Computers. I once took my trusty portable typewriter (and coffee maker) to a new job so we had some basics while I got to work setting up the business. Today I find myself feeling worryingly nostalgic for that old portable 😉

… that a sportsman responded to an typically dull question about how a particular experience felt as being like “taking a running f*** at a rolling doughnut!” That’s one sports presenter who might (but only might) learn how to vary their game on questions!

… that a disgruntled person left the following review on the Radical Tea Towel website along with their one star review:“Bunch of Socialist, hippy and woke tea towel nonsense!” This didn’t have had the effect they were going for because, when the website shared their feedback, people flocked to the site to buy said tea towels. I bought one which says “Vote Larry the Cat for PM!” which features the cat who lives at 10 Downing Street.

… that watching the final Downton Abbey film over the festive period was a downright disappointment. We’ve watched it all, so weren’t expecting anything high-brow, but it really was a nonsense, with the only people to come out of it well being the wardrobe department.

… that the DVDs in my boxset of the West Wing have deteriorated and no longer work properly. I hoped it would be the DVD player which was the problem, but it works perfectly on other DVDs. I am gutted, both as it’s one of my favourite pieces of TV and because I felt the need to comfort watch it right now… My distress was exacerbated when I discovered the price to replace it.

What’s new in your world? Or just new to you? Anything making you feel amused, raise your eyebrows, or even gob-smacked?

  1. I enjoy random tidbits/facts/stories like this. It’s interesting to see what makes others stop, think, react to or what they find worthy to highlight about their world. I am working on a few update posts myself, one a new monthly format, although I often don’t last long on blogging commitments 😉 I can relate to your disappointment on the Downton finale. I too loved the show, saw every episode, etc. This final movie was rather unremarkable at best. As to raised eyebrows and feeling gob-smacked…well everyday in the USA brings on those reactions so…

  2. Your final comment is sadly the perfect example of living in a gob-smacking world.

The Downton film was an even bigger disappointment as we’d decided to pay to view as a treat for us during a period of illness. Clearly all involved got a big pay out, but what a crock of shite!

Thank you for saying you like random bits & pieces like this, it’s good to know I’m not the only one whose mind collects this sort of stuff 🙂

  3. Yes, I’m all for a well-written and interesting deviation from the truth if it makes for a better tale. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll keep an eye out for it, as it sounds right up our street.

  4. I try to hold out hope that some level of normal will return here before I leave the world. I was planning to go to the theaters to watch Downton but never made it so ended up doing the same as you on streaming. I think I came out fairly low cost as I used my digital Amazon credits. It is disheartening when you expect better. If my new endeavor pans out on the blog I can supply you with a few random tidbits at the end of each month. More to come on that 🙂

  5. I’ve not been to see a film in the theatre for *years*. Himself is too big to fit comfortably into cinema seats and the sound is so loud it hurts his bat like ears, so we have to make do with the ridiculously large sized TV he bought before we moved into out teeny tiny apartment! I did not about digital credits on Amazon. I shall ask Himself about them as we run our watching via his Prime account.

I look forward to reading your new endeavour 🙂

  6. Yes, the credits are nice and can be used for Kindle books or towards movie/show rentals or purchases. You have to watch for the offer as they pop up at check out at times if you choose one of the later delivery dates over something like overnight

  7. Generally, I am not unhappy with surprises. Just of late, the political stuff has been sending surprises I’ve been most unhappy with. Hence why I look for the ridiculous in the small stuff of life as a source of small comfort or amusement rather than WTF yelled out loud.

  8. LOL on only “Downton Abbey’s” wardrobe coming off well. Apparently “The Gilded Age” has quite a few fans? My favorite movie last year was K POP DEMON HUNTERS and I enjoyed reading “Wedding People.” Currently reading “The Incandescent” and it’s good so far.

  9. I love your random bits of knowledge. I suppose we could all make a list if we’d bother to keep track of the fun, small things we learn each day.

I never thought about the Apollo astronauts getting photography lessons. Of courses they did.

My sister is a huge fan of Downton Abbey. I was the holdout who never got into it.

  10. Ah, that may explain it – Mr Fellows has moved on to a new project and was only in it for the large payout!

K Pop Demon Hunters sounds like something that both Himself and my granddaughter would like – I shall recommend. Thank you for the book recommendation. I am struggling to come out of my Three Pines fuzzy haze, not helped by the fact that I’ve picked something totally unsuitable as a transitional read. Wedding People sounds way more suitable. Incandescent sounds fascinating, I have added it to my Kindle already 🙂

  11. I thought likewise Mark, and wasn’t aware I’d done anything wrong in my storage of them (stored upright in shelves, still in original box and original cases). They are probably 15-20 years old, but still.

  12. Nicki, if it wasn’t for that old forum, I not be in the habit of saving those bits & pieces.

Reading about the Apollo astronauts getting photography lessons made me smile as, apparently, the critique was pretty brutal. But when you’re paying some seriously big money to Hasselblad to develop new cameras, I guess it makes sense. What was amusing is they didn’t train astronauts on their earlier missions, so any of those photos simply relied on individual astronauts having skills or interest. The guy doing the remastering says the difference in quality is clearly more than just the difference in camera technology.

I held out for a while on Downton too, but then fell while recovering from surgery when I needed mindless pretty viewing and someone lent me a series.

  13. I’m glad I never saw Downton Abbey in the movie theater. (I loved the shows, though)

A pocket for you cheese toasties- tell me more. I’m intrigued.

  14. There’s been 3 films I think. The first 2 were fine, they leant into the TV series’s strengths. Sadly with the final one, the script – such as it was – felt ridiculous and dashed off.

But onto better things. I think these were the ones Himself bought: Microwave-Sandwiches

  15. Downton Abbey would have been perfect when you’re recovering from surgery. The scenery is certainly beautiful.

  16. Nicki, I was so fortunate in having friends who understood what I’d need in that recovery period, and then sent all their light ‘n fluffy viewing my way.
