Music

I’ve not done a music related post for a while, so here’s a collection of bits & pieces of music which gives me pleasure…

Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay “Sunny
There’s a better quality video of him performing this at the Montreux Jazz Festival, but I prefer this stripped back version with Jools Holland on piano.

Dead South “In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company
In truth, the video gives me pleasure too ๐Ÿ™‚

Robert Palmer “She Makes My Day”
My brother & sister-in-law choose this for their wedding. Despite it being both his & her second time up the aisle, they still beat me to the punch as it’s what I’d have chosen ๐Ÿ™‚

John Lee Hooker & Carlos Santana “The Healer”
A fan of both, I stumbled upon this and have loved it ever since.

Snow Patrol “Chasing Cars”
Not a song I had any affection for until I became a regular at my local rugby club where this was the unofficial anthem – sung when drink taken, while standing on tables waving a pint in the air (yes, me included, although I was a bit younger and a lot fitter at the time).

Tom Odell “Can’t Pretend”
This was played over an advertisement in the UK. For most songs, that’s a death knell, but somehow it got under my skin instead.

The Travelling Wilburys “Handle With Care”
George Harrison’s own little band of star turns – what’s not to love?

Yo Yo Ma & Itzsak Perlman “Slavonic Dance Op 72, No 2 in E minor
I came late to classical music, but fell in love with the cello almost immediately.

Ryuichi Sakamoto “Amore”
He composed music for The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, but I heard this when I was suffering heartbreak and it struck a chord.

Amy Winehouse “Me and Mr Jones”
A favourite of mine. Here’s a live performance in 2006 before things went bad – what a voice.

I stopped listing to the radio many years ago, so I tend to be reliant on recommendations – hit me with yours please.

  1. Oh yes, Solomon Burke is a great call, thank you. I’ve lost my music collection a couple of times and, having just purchased a reconditioned iPod, I’m making lists to re-build. I don’t know the other three names you’ve mentioned, so will be looking them up – thank you so much ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Thank you Janis. Love the sound of you choreographing something to the Healer for yourself & your husband, and I know what you mean about the Travelling Wilburys – a real step back into an earlier time. Glad to hear you sharing my love for Amy. A real loss to music.

  3. Geez Louise, asking me for a music recommendation is a bold move. I could easily list 50 artists off the top of my head. That’s hardly possible…

…but having said that, check out The Moondoggies, our favorite obscure little PNW indie band. Try “What Took So Long?” first and, if you like that, take off from there!

  4. Mark, I’m brave and I’m keen to fill up that new (reconditioned) iPod. And you know it’s your fault I got the idea to buy one, so…

The Moondoggies are already on my list as you’ve mentioned them before. That said, I see from your most recent post that there are names dropped, so I suspect all I have to do is read through your back issues and I’ll find plenty of suggestions!

  5. Amy Winehouse. I love her. Itโ€™s so much fun reading what others love to listen to.

I have so many musical artists that I love, and I listen to different kinds of music all the time. Lately Iโ€™ve been listening to ambient music because thatโ€™s what my nervous system is asking for. But I do love Valerie June, Bruce Hornsby, The Paper Kites, Fleet Foxes, Jose Gonzalezโ€ฆ I could go on and on.

  6. How interesting how ambient music having a soothing effect on the nervous system. I shall look into that. Funny that you mention Valerie June, you’re the second person to do so. I’m back on my iPod project after the coming week (and looking forward to it).
