Would you rather…?

  1. Would you rather have the ability to see minutes into the future or years into the future?
I would prefer minutes into the future as it could prove helpful in making a decision or to prevent a poor choice made in haste. But the true reason I choose the former rather than the latter, is I fear seeing too far into the future in case I find out something I’d rather not know and have to live with it.

  2. Would you rather have telekinesis (the ability to move things with your mind) or telepathy (the ability to read minds)?
I’m surprised by my instinctive reaction being telekinesis, as I’m fascinated by what people think and the reasons behind their decisions and behaviour. Yet seeing those thoughts without permission being granted feels inherently wrong. Despite being a largely open book, the idea of my unguarded thoughts being read by other people isn’t something I’m comfortable with, so I’m more than happy to stick with having intuition and knowing that people have chosen to talk to me, rather than intrusively reading their mind. Besides, being able to move heavy stuff with my mind would be oh so useful to an old weak body like mine!

  3. Would you rather find true love today or win the lottery next year?
If you’d asked this question 20 years ago, I’d have chosen the former. But I’ve found a lot of love since then – the deeply unhealthy love of your life kind, the fun kind, the heartbreaking kind, and finally the supportive, utterly reliable and funny kind. I don’t see how I could do any better, so I’ll take the lottery win next year.

  4. Would you rather be chronically under-dressed or overdressed?
There’s a rule about this somewhere and, while I’ve no idea who made it, I tend to agree with them. Over rather than under would always be my choice. When I stopped to ask myself why, I realised I’d rather be the butt of people’s jokes than feel their pity.

  5. Would you rather have universal respect or unlimited power?
That’s easy – universal respect. Based upon the state of the world currently, it seems clear that unlimited power is far too corrupting.

  6. Would you rather give up air conditioning & heating for the rest of your life or give up the Internet for the rest of your life?
There’s no doubting the internet has made all manner of things easier, but I’d still rather have the physical comfort of air conditioning and heating (especially air conditioning, as I’ve had to live without it most of my life). I also suspect we could all live perfectly decent and enjoyable lives with less digital implements in it. That said, if I were to be the only one in that position, I could see life becoming difficult, as so many organisations require people to interact with them via the internet… but I would still vote for heating and aircon.

  7. Would you rather have a personal maid or a personal chef?
I have a cleaner, so clearly I would choose a maid rather than a chef. Even without the excellent culinary skills of Himself available to me, I’d make the same choice because I enjoy cooking, whereas I absolutely hate cleaning.

  8. Would you rather be an extra in an Oscar-winning movie or the lead in a box office bomb?
I don’t like being the centre of attention, so being an extra would always be preferable, whether the film was a success or not. Being the lead in a box office bomb would be especially hard to bear when you feel the way I do about attention.

  9. Would you rather cuddle a koala or pal around with a panda?
I’m pretty sure Koalas can be a bit bitey, whereas Pandas look really goofy and their keepers appear to have loads of fun playing with them, and getting cuddles.

  10. Would you rather watch nothing but Hallmark Christmas movies or nothing but horror movies?
I started off thinking “duh” Hallmark Christmas films, of course! But then I remembered how many bad and/or truly naff Christmas films there are out there. Still, while those might be hard to stomach, horror films are not for me, so Hallmark holiday films it is.

  11. Would you rather find a rat in your kitchen or a roach in your bed?
As someone with a rodent phobia, it would have to be the cockroach. I have worked on my phobia, but while that’s allowed me to cope with mice, I’m not sure how well it would work if I came face-to-face with a big rat. Not saying the roach wouldn’t get a reaction, but I did grow up with them running around bathrooms when living overseas, so am slightly de-sensitised to them.

  12. Would you rather have a pause or a rewind button in your life?
Despite being old, I’d go for pause, as there are times when life becomes overwhelming and a period of time to let me catch my breath, to sit down with a cup of tea and allow my brain to stop feeling fried, would be welcome. The past weeks have had many days like this.

  13. Would you rather be gassy on a first date or your wedding night?
If you’re someone who suffers with gas, then it seems likely gassiness would’ve occurred well before you get to the wedding stage. And while it would be inconvenient and less than ideal, I’d hope it was something we could laugh at together. Personally, I’d find it awkward and embarrassing if it happened on a first date, as I’m pretty sure there would be no second date if it did.

  14. Would you rather have people spread a terrible lie about you or have people spread terrible but true tales about you?
The terrible truth has to be better than a terrible lie. At least you’ll have earned the reaction you get from the truth, which I’d prefer to being judged on the basis of a lie.

  15. Would you rather have a third nipple or an extra toe?
The third nipple, and not just because of Chandler Bing 😉 Surely an extra toe would cause problems with finding shoes to fit, whereas a third nipple is just potentially awkward or embarrassing the first time someone else sees it. And being female, although it wouldn’t be easy to shop for swimwear, they are generally designed to cover the top half of your body, unlike male swimwear.

I’d love to hear your responses to as many of these questions as you feel inclined to answer! 🙂

  1. Debs, I read through this post planning to come back to it and then promptly forgot. Oops 🙂 I found the decisions to be difficult, some I didn’t want to make a choice at all, and others pretty cut and dried without hesitation.
    1. Both. Minutes don’t seem like enough but then I’d rather not go too far into the future. Maybe just a year ahead at any given time?
    2. Telepathy for sure, although I do agree with the how much help it would be to get big things moved easily.
    3. Lottery hands down.
    4. Pretty sure I’ve lived my entire life under-dressed. I wouldn’t know how to be any different.
    5. Respect
    6. Given my age I know how to function without the internet so I could dredge up ways to cope. No one can take away heat. I’m always cold.
    7. Maid
    8. Extra
    9. Koala. I think they are lovely.
    10. Neither. Period dramas would top my list
    11. Rat. I would have to toss out the bed if I found a roach in it.
    12. Tough, but I would say rewind. It’s that old adage of “knowing what I know now” and wanting to have another go at better choices.
    13. Well neither, but wedding night probably.
    14. Truth, terrible or not.
    15. Nipple, but really I’ve always thought the concept of a third eye in the back of one’s head to have great potential and usefulness.

  2. Chronically undressed. Duh!
Oh, wait…I read that question wrong…

I once supervised a small team when I was younger, and admittedly, I wasn’t really cut out for that work. One day, I had to use one of my employee’s computers for something. They had left their email open, and I couldn’t help but see a conversation between her and another employee about what a terrible manager I was. It was both hurtful and humbling. Which is a long and roundabout way of saying, TELEKINESIS!!

  3. Reading the title, I thought this was going to be something easy, like chocolate or butterscotch. No such luck.

    1. I’m content taking things as they come. Even minutes ahead would be confusing.
    2. I’m with you. I could use help in moving things.
    3. Lottery

Skipping down to #7: Personal chef

There are some terrible choices here. You’re brave to consider them all.

  4. Deb, I’m so sorry for my very tardy response, I’ve been suffering from a combination of back trouble and gastritis, so feeling very sorry for myself.

Do you know, after I picked Pandas very firmly, I watched those clips again and they’re rather boisterous. Indeed, I suspect if they bowled into me the way they do their keepers, I could end up rather broken. I may join you in Koala land 🙂 And I am totally with you on the idea of a third eye in the back of my head. My daughter called me out when she was little as I could always tell when she was lying and may’ve mentioned the eye in the back of my head… only for her to bound into the bathroom where I was washing my hair and ask me how she looked. When I said I couldn’t see for having a head face full of soap, she asked why I didn’t use the eye in the back of my head. Oops! Smart kid, even then 🙂

  5. Mark, apologies for my very delayed response. I’ve been feeling rather under the weather (a combination of back trouble and gastritis) so avoiding the computer.

You thought I meant nekid?? 😉 I see you understand the pitfalls of finding out what other people are thinking. Telekinesis is sooo much safer!

  6. Nicki, sorry to be late in responding to you – I’ve been in whining mode due to back trouble and gastritis arriving at the same time.

Funny, I didn’t think them terrible choices rather just not straightforward ones. I guess I do like to put myself through the thinking mill…

  7. You weren’t late. I was.

The reason I called them terrible choices was that some of them had us choosing between two bad choices. For example: I don’t want to be either over- or under-dressed. I really would like to be just right. But that’s life, isn’t it. The choice isn’t always between two good things–cheesecake and apple pie. Either one would be a good choice.

  8. I’m so sorry you’ve been feeling unwell Debs. I hope things are improving at this point.
I think we forget just how big panda’s get. That image of the fluffy black and white stuffed toy isn’t very realistic is it 😉 Love that your daughter caught you in that small white lie. My kids probably caught me in many over the years as well.

  9. Mark, I’ve to admit never watching that film (I struggle with Mel Gibson – his extreme Catholicism) which I’ve allowed to put me off watching much of his back catalogue. But I kinda imagined that’s where the film was going… 😉

  10. Thanks Deb, things are very slowly improving. I suspect the problems are overlapping and causing difficulties in both diagnosis and treatment. For example, my chiropractor is being extra cautious in treating me, which means my recovery is taking a bit longer. I am – of course – happy at his cautious approach, just frustrated that he has to be.

I love that both our kids caught us out. We were blessed with smart kids who’ve gone on to be great adults. That said, it’s something we can both be proud of having contributed to.

  11. Mel Gibson is problematic. Actually, he’s an ass, so I don’t blame you for skipping his movies. I would never watch this one again (though I can’t resist “Braveheart”).

  12. Nooooo Mark, nooooo! Not Braveheart!
I’m afraid that I stand solidly with the Scots who are largely disparaging about that film 🙂

But on the subject of his ass-ness, you are spot on sir!

  13. These are interesting 🤓

    1. Would you rather have the ability to see minutes into the future or years into the future?
Years into the future – more intriguing for me that a few minutes.

    2. Would you rather have telekinesis (the ability to move things with your mind) or telepathy (the ability to read minds)?
Ability to read minds would be really interesting….though I’d be wary that if I could do it someone then it stands to reason someone else might be able to do it to me…bit creepy.

    3. Would you rather find true love today or win the lottery next year?
Lottery next year – could help a lot of other people with that.

    4. Would you rather be chronically under-dressed or overdressed?
Always overdressed – far more advantages to that than the latter.

    5. Would you rather have universal respect or unlimited power?
Universal respect, which is generally the case, it’s usually a minority who are not respectful. Unlimited power = God

    6. Would you rather give up air conditioning & heating for the rest of your life or give up the Internet for the rest of your life?
Heating is linked to survival so the internet can go.

    7. Would you rather have a personal maid or a personal chef?
    A chef would be lovely.

    8. Would you rather be an extra in an Oscar-winning movie or the lead in a box office bomb?
    Neither.

    9. Would you rather cuddle a koala or pal around with a panda?
    Cuddle a koala.

    10. Would you rather watch nothing but Hallmark Christmas movies or nothing but horror movies?
    Christmas movies.

    11. Would you rather find a rat in your kitchen or a roach in your bed?
Rat in the kitchen. Probably easier to figure out where it came from and adress that quickly.

    12. Would you rather have a pause or a rewind button in your life?
Rewind, if it meant being able to replay some bits differently.

    13. Would you rather be gassy on a first date or your wedding night?
On a first date. You could always say you’re unwell, leave early and reschedule, for another time….not so easy to do that with your wedding night!!

    14. Would you rather have people spread a terrible lie about you or have people spread terrible but true tales about you?
A terrible truth (if there are any lol)

    15. Would you rather have a third nipple or an extra toe?
Extra toe – unlikely to be noticed much or cause much discomfort or distortion to physical appearance

  14. No reason that you should be Mark – lots of people enjoy it without thinking about that, it is “only” entertainment after all 🙂

  15. Oh Cherryl, thank you for answering them all. It’s so interesting to see the variations from the answers I chose. For example, your logic with regard to the rat in the kitchen was spot on, although while I am loads better on the rodent front, I jumped out of my skin recently when something moved in a low dark cupboard in mine, until I discovered it was a toad. How it got in is still a mystery…
